Dynamic Dungeon

I finished penciling in the dynamics in Lilies. What a job. What makes it so difficult for me is I’m constantly arguing with myself over each marking. I want to communicate my concept of sound level, but I don’t want to micromanage the players. They need room to contribute their own musicianship. Trouble is, I’ve played with lots of people who have no idea what to contribute or who want firm direction. On the other hand, I’ve played with people who are irritated by too many markings. So I look at each phrase and think, will the player see the obvious crescendo and diminuendo? Will they know they’re supposed to play under the lead line? If I’m trying to do something tricky then yes, of course, I’ll put in dynamics to indicate which voice is prominent. But otherwise, it feels like a quagmire.
